This is just what colonists like the English do - if a leader in one of their little subject states looks likely to create freedom from oppression by England then they launch diverse schemes against the leader that tarnish their reputation, whether the leader has sinned or not.

The whole case against the SNP is just murky enough for me to see a colonial op written all over it.
